Surreal, foppish hairpiece at the #hairbysammcknight exhibition at @somersethouselondon now. Reminds me of a cross between a pet guinea pig and a 'peruke' or powdered wig which in the early eighteenth century would be scented with orange flower /rose / orris root - and sometimes applied using bellows!

It's not the Grand Budapest Hotel but it is the Grand Hotel San Pellegrino - huge art nouveau construction down the road from the water factory and boarded up since the 1970s.

Dud apricots being dealt with by roasting with honey & rosemary. You never get a good one in England.

Sniffing roses at @chelsea_physic_garden last week. So many luscious ones in bloom right now smelling of grapefruit.

@nickrgilbert getting up close to a bizarre turquoise flower from Chile at @chelsea_physic_garden - it was a mecca for flies and we thought it smelt like cider and malt vinegar. Mmmmm.

Incredible roster of roses for day long event on the Queen of Flowers at @chelsea_physic_garden - my favorite one is the Abraham Darby from @davidaustinroses which smells like nectarines and almond milk

Museum guide demonstrating steam distillation. We got a hard sell on the therapeutic benefits of lavender oil I can tell you.

My favourite display at the perfume museum yesterday: this collection of scent bottle enamel badges - as a child I copied my friend @artmacabre and started collecting them, so this was enamel nirvana to me.

My June column for @thepooluk is all about Impulse bodyspray. The best quid a girl ever spent on fragrance and no you don't have to be 13 #perfume #sprayandgo

Finally reunited with my Phantosmia scent tour of Old Hollywood ghosts from the @artandolfaction institute. I might not be in LA anymore but at least I can do a google street view tour as I sniff Charles Love and Peg Entwhistle's parting shots. #perfume #oldhollywood #ghoststories

New bonkers perfume in Selfridges from Gri Gri which is all about tattoos - an inevitable development in scent land. This one is about Japanese body art and has genmaicha and yuzu, two of my favorite smells, which gives it a bizarre toasted / malted opening. Worth a sniff!

Suitably sober-looking entrance way for tonight's event - the scent of (human) sacrifice. At the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, Cambridge.

Wildflowers growing among the seaweed tendrils on the cliff at Mendocino- the best-smelling stretch of coastline I've been to.

This is one of the prettiest puddings I've ever had the pleasure of smashing with my fork: mulberry pavlova with green almonds.

Japanese garden at Golden Gate park. Climbing this bridge - which is vertical up the sides - was err not an elegant affair.

Love a jellyfish - at Monterey Bay.

At the bonkers Hearst Castle - built in a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Beautiful outside but inside is a bizarre mix of Moorish, Mission style, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Disney meets National Trust. Hearst also brought in polar and grizzly bears which lived in the grounds.

The VCR is reborn in fragrance form. Loved meeting droll perfumer Killian from Xyrena perfumes at the AIX scent fair this weekend. Pool Boy was a cracker but Basic Bitch was even better - he's tracked down an old VCR manufacturer to remake the tape boxes.
